6 Tips to Streamline Package Deliveries & Returns

The allure of online shopping is undeniable, but the aftermath – a constant influx of cardboard boxes and padded envelopes – can quickly turn chaotic.  Don't let your entryway become overwhelmed by packages and result in forgotten returns!  Here are 5 top tips to conquer the cardboard chaos and reclaim control:

  1.  Create a "Shipping Station".

Designate a space near your entry door for incoming packages to gather. This could be a designated basket, under a skirted table, behind a sofa, a mudroom cupboard, or the bottom of a closet.  The key is to establish a clear "drop zone" to prevent boxes from creating a mess and being forgotten.

  1.  Have the right supplies on hand.

Keep a retractable blade handy for easy box opening in your “shipping station”. And clear tape for packing up returns.

  1.  Batch processing is your friend:

Resist the urge to deal with each package as it arrives. Instead, schedule designated times once or twice a week to open everything.  Bonus points if this happens just before your cardboard recycling pick-up day!

  1.  Make a decision and follow through

If you are keeping it - put it away.  If you are returning it - prepare the labels and package then.  If you are unsure, then clearly label it with the day it needs to go back so you are not forced to keep it because you missed the return deadline.

  1.  Embrace a “sticky dot” system:

Channel your inner organizer and use bright-colored sticky dots for return management. Assign a color to each return method (pink for post office, orange for UPS, green for Whole Foods, etc.).  Write the return deadline on each dot for a clear reminder. This system keeps things organized and ensures timely returns for those "didn't quite work out" items.

  1.   Schedule "return times" to drop off packages in batches.

Perhaps put all returns in the trunk of your car so they are out of your home. But don't forget to return them before the cut-off deadline.  Add this task to your regular weekly "errand day".  You'll save time, gas and money as this prevents forgotten returns,

BONUS TIP - Save those padded envelopes for friends who are moving to warp glasses and dishes.   Why buy bubble wrap when Amazon sends it for free?

Embrace the power of designated spaces, smart return systems, and batch processing to conquer the cardboard chaos once and reclaim control!
