7 Ways to Find Amazing Free Stuff!

Looking for a creative way to get what you need—without spending a dime? Whether you’re cutting back on shopping, or just love the thrill of finding something for free, there are so many ways to discover amazing items while keeping things out of the landfill.
I’ve been using Buy Nothing for a while now, and it’s been a fantastic way to give and receive things in my community. In the spirit of #ShopFreeFebruary, I decided to dive even deeper into all the ways you can find free stuff—and I was amazed at what’s out there!
Here are seven places to score great finds for free!
1 - Buy Nothing Groups
If you haven’t joined a Buy Nothing group yet, you’re missing out! These hyperlocal communities (best on Facebook but also on the Buy Nothing app) allow neighbors to give, receive, borrow, and share—all for free. I’ve seen everything from brand-new kitchen gadgets to unopened skincare products, leftover party decorations, and even furniture!
You can also post a request if you need something specific. Once someone in my group asked for a flapper dress for a costume party—and I happened to have one sitting in my closet, ready to lend!
2 - Facebook Marketplace – Free Section
Many people use Facebook Marketplace to sell items, but did you know there’s a "Free" section too? People list things they no longer need, often in excellent condition, simply because they want them gone quickly. This is a great place to find free furniture, kids' toys, household items, and even moving boxes.
3 - Neighborhood Listservs & Apps
Your local community probably has some kind of online forum where people post free items. Check out:
Nextdoor – Many neighborhoods have a “Free & For Sale” section where people list things they want to give away.
Freecycle – This long-standing website is dedicated to keeping items out of landfills by connecting people who have things to give with those who need them.
Local email listservs – Some communities and apartment buildings have email groups where neighbors post freebies.
4 - Curb Alerts & Sidewalk Finds
Ever seen a “FREE” sign on a pile of stuff by the curb? Many people leave unwanted (but still good) items outside for others to take. If you’re comfortable with it, a quick drive or walk around your neighborhood—especially on weekends or the night before trash pickup—can lead to some surprising discoveries.
Pro tip: Some Buy Nothing and Facebook groups allow people to post curb alerts when they put something out, so others can come grab it before it’s gone!
5 - Library Giveaways & Book Swaps
Libraries aren’t just for borrowing books—they also give them away! Many libraries have a small free shelf or run book swaps where you can take a book (or a few) for free. Some also offer magazines, DVDs, and even puzzles.
6 - Local Events & Swap Meets
Keep an eye out for clothing swaps, toy exchanges, and free markets in your area. Some are organized through community centers, churches, or local sustainability groups. These are fantastic for updating your wardrobe, finding kids’ gear, or getting rid of items you no longer need in exchange for something new to you.
Even better, some cities hold “Really Really Free Markets”—yes, everything there is 100% free!
7 - Community "Little Free" Boxes
You’ve probably seen Little Free Libraries for books, but some neighborhoods have expanded the idea to include:
Little Free Pantries (free food and toiletries)
Baby Gear Share Boxes (free baby and toddler essentials)
Office Supply Sharing Stations (extra notebooks, pens, and more)
These small neighborhood boxes are perfect for grabbing (or donating) something useful!
I love the idea of giving items a second life rather than letting them sit unused or go to waste. Finding creative ways to share, swap, and repurpose not only saves money but also helps build stronger communities and reduces waste.
Whether you're looking for something specific or just open to discovering hidden treasures, these free resources can help you "shop" smarter—and spend nothing! Why not take a look around and see what you can find? You might be surprised at the amazing things available for free!
