The 3 Zone Rule for a Glorious Garage!

If your garage is feeling more like a dumping ground than a functional space, it might be time for a fresh perspective. One of my favorite ways to tackle garage organization is by thinking in zones—specifically: Floor, Walls, and Ceiling.

This strategy not only helps make the best use of the space you have, but it also helps you think practically about what items go where. Let’s break it down:

ZONE 1: The Floor (Heavy-Duty Ground Crew)

The floor is prime real estate—but it should be reserved only for items that must be on the ground due to weight, size, or use. This includes:

  •       Vehicles: Cars, motorcycles, bikes (when using)
  •       Large Equipment: Lawnmowers, snow blowers, pressure washers
  •       Waste Management: Garbage, recycling, compost/yard waste bins
  •       Tools: Tool chests, workbenches
  •       Outdoor Cooking: Grills, smokers
  •       Sports Equipment: Bicycles, weight benches, gym equipment
  •       Automotive Supplies: Spare tires, jacks, oil containers
  •       Seasonal Items: Bags of soil, firewood, ice melt

Pro tip: If your floor is so packed that you can’t park your car, it’s time to rethink what truly belongs there. Zone your items when possible, ex: the lawnmower near garden tools.  Prioritize clear pathways and space around the car to be able to open car doors.

ZONE 2: The Walls (Go vertical where possible!)

Once the floor is accounted for, the walls become your best friend. Use freestanding shelves, bins, or adjustable slat wall systems with hooks and more to store lighter, more frequently used items where you can see and reach them. Consider:

  •       Outerwear: Coats, boots, shoes (especially if lacking a mudroom)
  •       Sports Gear: Helmets, bats, balls, skis, golf clubs
  •       Camping Equipment: Tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, cooking
  •       Seasonal Decorations: Holiday lights, ornaments, décor
  •       Yard & Garden Tools: Rakes, shovels, hoses, blowers, ladders
  •       Automotive Care: Car wax, cleaning supplies, oils & liquids
  •       Children's Items: Outdoor toys, strollers, scooters
  •       Summer Fun: Sand toys, Inflatables, beach chairs
  •       Home Supplies: Light bulbs, batteries, extension cords, paper goods

Pro Tip: Store things in these bins in two different sizes that are designed to fit on these shelves. Boldly mark the contents with these changeable labels so everyone in your household knows where things go. Or use a wall-mounted system to keep items off the ground and out of the way, while still easily accessible when you need them.

ZONE 3: The Ceiling (For Off-Season or Rarely Used)

If you're tight on space, the ceiling can be your secret storage weapon. Use a ceiling-mounted storage bin rack, it’s ideal for:

  •       Seasonal sports gear: kayaks, paddleboards, sleds
  •       Holiday decorations: Artificial trees, wreaths, lights, decor
  •       Travel items: Luggage,  rooftop cargo box, coolers

Pro Tip: Be safe—always double-check weight limits and anchor everything properly! And consider installing a pulley system for bikes – get them up and out of the way off season.

A well-organized garage is not about getting rid of everything. It's about knowing what you have, where it lives, and being able to access it without stepping over ten things to get there.

So next time you walk into your garage and feel that little jolt of stress? Remember the 3 zones—and know that a calm, clear garage is just a few bins, hooks, and shelves away.
