How to Declutter Your Books in 4 Clear Steps

Too many books, not enough shelves? The floor is not an option! Here’s a guilt-free way to let go of what no longer serves you.

Whether you’re downsizing, prepping for a move, or simply tired of shelves that are double-stacked and dusty, decluttering your book collection can feel overwhelming—emotionally and logistically.

But don’t worry. With these 4 simple steps, you’ll feel lighter, clearer, and still surrounded by the books you truly love.

Step 1: Divide and Conquer

You will decide its fate by first considering which category it goes in:

  1.  Books You’ve Read
  2.  Books You Haven’t Read (Yet)

This simple split makes every next decision so much easier.

Step 2: For Books You’ve Read — Ask: “Friend, Acquaintance, or Stranger?”

This question (borrowed with thanks from organizing expert Judith Kolberg) makes emotional sorting a breeze.

It's a Friend

  •  You loved it, recommend it, or want to reread it = Keep
  •  You loved it but are ready to pass it on = Donate or gift
  •  It contains useful info you’ll refer to = Keep

It's an Acquaintance

  •  It was just okay, don't feel any guilt = Let it go

It's a Stranger

  •  You didn’t like it or don’t even remember it = Definitely let it go

Step 3: For Books You Haven’t Read — Ask: “Who am I saving this for?”

My Current Self

  •  It aligns with your current goals or interests = Keep (but make time to read it soon!)
  •  If you haven’t touched it after 12–18 more months = Let it go

My Past Self

  •  It once made sense for you, but you’ve moved on = Let it go
  •      It still has sentimental or reference value = Keep

My Future Self

  •  You might want to read it one day, but if the info’s available online, at the Library, or on audiobook = Let it go

My Fantasy Self

  •  You’re holding onto it for a version of you who reads French poetry, studies art history, or bakes every weekend—but that’s not really your life? It's time to be honest with yourself = Let it go

Trust me, letting go of "someday" frees up space for who you are right now.

Step 4: Let Them Go Thoughtfully

Once you’ve made your decisions, choose the best exit strategy:

Want to sell or swap them?  Here are a few options:

Want to donate them?

Decluttering your books doesn’t mean you’re turning your back on reading—it means you’re curating a collection that reflects who you truly are now. Let your shelves breathe, and let your books bring you joy—not stress.
