Shop Less, Save More: 5 Easy Hacks!

We’re well into #ShopFreeFebruary, and if you’re like me, tuning out the constant sales ads—especially after President’s Day weekend—has become a bit easier. But for some, it’s not so simple.

One woman contacted me after trying #ShopFreeFebruary, only to realize she was absolutely unable to stop shopping. She described herself as deeply in debt and confessed to being a “shopaholic.” Unfortunately, she’s not alone.

Studies estimate that 6% to 9% of Americans struggle with compulsive shopping. That’s a staggering 18 to 30 million people! The average American carries a $6,380 balance across 3 to 4 credit cards. And today’s challenges— general anxiety, social media influencers, and tempting “buy now, pay later” options—are making it even harder for many to resist the urge to shop.  Here’s how the cycle works:

  •  Anticipation – A preoccupation with the idea of buying something or the thrill of planning a shopping trip.
  •  Preparation – The excitement of deciding where to shop, what to wear, and which credit card to use.
  •  Shopping – The rush of joy or euphoria when purchasing or receiving an item.
  •  Spending – The emotional crash: guilt, shame, and regret for overspending.

You may find that compulsive shopping is a NOT problem for you but want to shop less and save more!  Here are 5 Hacks to Help:

  1.  Identify Emotional Triggers: Pay attention to your emotions before, during, and after shopping. Are you buying because you’re bored, stressed, or seeking a mood boost?
  2.  Replace the Habit: Find positive activities to replace scrolling and shopping, like self-care routines, exercising, or volunteering. These alternatives can provide the emotional satisfaction you’re seeking.
  3.  Track Every Purchase: Keep a spending journal to record every purchase, whether it was a “need’ or a “want” and note the emotions you felt before buying. This awareness can be eye-opening and help you shop less.
  4.  Unsubscribe from Retail Emails and Texts: Avoid temptation by using a dedicated email for online shopping and unsubscribing from retailer newsletters. “STOP” is your best friend!
  5.  Pause Before Buying: When you feel the urge to buy something, take a moment to breathe and reflect. Leave it in the cart for 24 hours. Ask yourself if you truly need the item or if it’s just an emotional impulse.

If you’re struggling with overshopping—or just want to shop LESS—try these hacks to feel more empowered and in control.
