6 Stellar Tips to Store Your Holiday Décor!

holiday decor storage boxes

It’s nearly time to pack up our holiday decorations and store them safely until next year. To make the process simple and stress-free, I’m sharing six easy tips—including one that was featured as Tip #2 in a recent Rent.com article in collaboration with Redfin!

1. Keep Early Décor Separate (As Featured Expert in Rent.com!)

Set aside items like advent calendars, Hanukkah decorations, or anything you use early in December. Consider storing these with your Thanksgiving or autumn décor or label a box “Early December” for quick access next year.

2. Snap Photos for Next Year

Want to recreate your beautifully decorated spaces effortlessly? Take photos of your staged mantel, tree, or table settings before you pack up. Save the photos in a labeled folder on your phone or print them out to include with the decorations. Next year, you’ll have a cheat sheet ready to go for a picture-perfect holiday setup!

3. Declutter Before You Pack

Ask yourself, "Does this décor still spark joy?" If there are items you didn’t use this year or that no longer match your style, it’s time to let them go. Donate gently used decorations or recycle anything broken or worn out.

4. Store by Display Location

Simplify your unpacking next year by storing decorations based on where they’re used. Keep mantel pieces in one box, tree ornaments in another, and outdoor lights in their own container. When it’s time to decorate again, you’ll be ready to deck the halls with ease.

5. Label Everything Clearly

Big, bold labels are your best friend. Mark each storage box with its contents, like “Mantel,” “Kitchen,” or “Outdoor Lights,” so you can find exactly what you need at a glance.

6. Use the Reverse Ornament Rule

When packing ornaments, place less precious ones at the bottom, moderately important ones in the middle, and your most cherished ornaments on top. This makes unpacking a joy as your favorite pieces are ready to go first and set the tone for your decorating.

Do your “future self” a favor and follow these simple tips. You’ll save yourself time and effort and be so pleased to decorate again when the holidays roll around next year.
